is sunscreen unhealthy?
Posted by adminI am 20 years old and wear sunscreen daily to hopefully help put off aging of the skin and skin damage caused by UV rays.
I was trying to find which type of sunscreen is better – physical (titanium/zinc oxides, which block rays) or chemical (avobenzate, etc) that absorb rays.
So I was doing some research though and found that both chemical and physical sunscreens are dangerous for the skin because they react with photons and these reactions damage the skin nuclei, causing skin damage and even cancer.
What gives?? It doesn't seem right that not wearing sunscreen would be better than wearing it, especially when exposed to lots of sun..
It's totally healthy and necessary. You will still get vitamin D even if you wear sunscreen. I use this one brand which I love. La Roche Posay has a sunscreen moisturizer that is the only FDA approved (in the last 20 years) sunscreen on the market. It has both Mexoryl and Anthelios.
Mexoryl SX is the first effective photostable UVA absorber. That means that unlike other sun filters, it does not degrade when exposed to the sun. Mexoryl SX absorbs the sun's radiation and accelerates to an excited state. It then releases the absorbed energy into the environment as harmless energy and returns to its stable state, ready to absorb more UV energy and protect the skin. This gives Anthelios SX a unique advantage over other sunscreens – it keeps protecting your skin at a high level for a longer period of time, even 5 hours after application.
Anthelios SX also provides greater protection against UVA rays, the sun rays responsible for over 80% of skin aging and linked to skin cancer. Up to 95% of the UV rays that reach the skin are UVA rays. Unlike UVB rays, which are responsible for tanning and burning, UVA rays fluctuate very little throughout the day, and are even present on cloudy days. UVA rays also fluctuate little throughout the year, meaning that even in winter, when sunscreens are often discarded, they're still reaching your skin. UVA rays can even pass through glass to reach us when we're indoors. If that wasn't enough, UVA rays also penetrate deeper into the skin. Whereas UVB rays are blocked by the stratum corneum and allow affect the Epidermis, UVA can penetrate down to the Hypodermis, causing long-term hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and loss of elasticity. They also suppress the skin's immune system, increasing the likelihood of developing skin cancer. Anthelios SX provides total protection against UVA rays, keeping your skin safe throughout the years.
I hope this helps!

Sun really isn't bad for you, you get vitamins from it that you can't get from anything else, but chemicals do harm you. I don't use sunscreen because of that.

USE SUNSCREEN!
It is good for you and helps to protect you. If you do not use sunscreen, when you get older you will get sun spots (also called "fake" freckles) all over you. You also have a HUGE risk of getting skin cancer if you do not use sunscreen. The sun can do a lot of damage to you if you dont protect yourself well enough. When you do wear sunscreen, remember to keep re-applying it because it wears off after a while.
Just ask your doctor, you need to wear sunscreen!

sunscreen is beneficial if you are spending more than 15 mins in the sun…..go to a health food store and look at the types they carry, they are less likely to have some of the unhealthy chemicals you are concerned about.
