Is zinc oxide safe?

Posted by admin

I have acne, and ive noticed that sun exposure makes me break out. still, ive been trying to use natural skin care and i dont want to smear a bunch of harmful chemicals on my face. when i asked someone i respect about sunscreen, she said, "Get some sun…it is natural and healthful. Do NOT use a commercial sunscreen or do so at your own risk. Toxic. More people get skin cancer who use it than those who do not." still, i would feel much safer with a sunscreen on, especially at the beach. i looked around and noticed that most "natural" sunscreens have sinc oxide as the active ingredient. is it harmful? what natural sunscreens would you guys recommend?

Yes, Zinc Oxide is safe.
You should not listen to the idiot who told you that crap. She does not know what she's talking about. At all.

  4. Mattias S Said,

Sunscreen is supposed to stay on the surface of the skin and act like an inert filter – thereby reduce the amount of UV-radiation that reaches the skin. In the scientific literature it is shown repeatedly that sunscreen does partly penetrate into the skin where it produces free radicals. These free radicals increase the risk of malignant melanoma. The allegation that sunscreen protects from skin-cancer is widely debated in the scientific literature: see wikipedia (sunscreen). The only sunscreen that does not penetrate into the skin is Zink-oxide – but not the nano-sized one. This Zink-oxide (not nano sized!!!) stays on the surface which makes it unpleasant to use, but at least it does not increase your Melanoma risk.
Many sunscreen manufacturers have added substances that work like the forbidden Bergamot oil. They increase the tanning effect despite the blocking of the UV-light. Those – harmful – substances are: benzophenone-3, oxybenzone, Butyl Metoxydibenzoylmethane, Avobenzone and Coumarin.

Avoid sunscreen the medical statistic shows that they increase your melanoma risk. (Source: peer reviewed scientific literature. / and wikipedia (sunscreen))

If you want to get tanned you should not use any sunscreen. The sunburn and the increased melanin production are triggered by the same mechanism – this is the direct DNA damage (see wikipedia sunscreen). Therefore it is impossible to increase the melanin production without having exactly that kind of DNA damage that – in large amounts – causes sunburn.

Sunburn and Melanoma are caused by two different mechanisms – that is why most (all?) sunscreens prevent sunburn, but increase the melanoma-risk.

As I said those sunscreens which allow you to tan contain substances that increase the direct DNA damage. And it is pretty stupid to first filter the UV-B radiation and then increase the effect of the remaining UV-B radiation.

The medical statistics show, that sunscreen users have more melanoma than others. (see wikipedia: sunscreen)
