Sunblock works by either physically blocking and reflecting the light and UV rays off the skin, or by absorbing and neutralizing the UV rays. Calculate how often to re-apply sunblock by multiplying the sunscreen SPF by the number of minutes it takes to burn. Use tips from a makeup artist in this free video on skin care.

Benzophenones
PABA and PABA esters
Cinnamates
Salicylates
Digalloyl trioleate
Menthyl anthranilate
Avobenzone

Sprout teaches you what you can use, which is safe for your skin and safe for the ocean. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are two ingredients deemed safe. However, zinc oxide seems to be the better choice. If you forgo sunblock, you can get some much needed vitamin D.
