This is the first episode of a series of different “All About”s.

There will be a couple of parts to this one… All About Foundation!

*The brands I talk about are those that I have personally tried, therefore I can say whether it is good or bad. There are many other good and bad products out there, however because I have not tried them yet, I cannot give my review on them or recommend them to you.* In this part, I answer the following questions. I have almost added the text of what I wrote so you can read it if you like! :D

10.Why does my foundation make my face look white in pictures?
A commonly used active ingredient in many foundations is zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is basically as the name states it as, the oxide of zinc. It is a white powder that is commonly found in cosmetic products, skin care products, and it is the basis of sunscreen. Zinc oxide is used as an OTC skin protectant and sunscreen agent. Because it is a sunscreen agent, it works in that it reflects and scatters UV radiation. When you take a picture with flash, and are wearing makeup that contains zinc oxide, it will reflect and scatter the light from the flash and thus cause your face to look white. Another active ingredient, titanium dioxide, the oxide of titanium serves the same purpose as zinc oxide in that it acts as a sunscreen protectant. It is also found in many cosmetic products, bath soaps, and powders. Thus, although sunscreen is very good for your skin as it helps prevent sunburn and thus skin cancer, it isnt the best for taking pictures. So, if you plan of taking pictures for an important event, then look for a foundation without these sunscreen agent active ingredients. Or, you can use a powder without any sunscreen agents over your normal foundation which will block them from doing their job and thus no more white face in pictures. But sunscreen and SPF is important for your skin, so if you arent taking pictures that day, its best to go for the SPF!

11. Knowing your skin type.
The first thing you want to know when choosing your foundation is your skin type. There are five different skin types: oily, combination (both oily and dry), dry, sensitive, and sun-damaged. A person can however have a more than one skin type as our skin is never completely even and uniform. A skin test that can be used to determine what type of skin you have was outlined by Rona Berg in her book Beauty about Basics. The test is to wash your face, pat it dry, and then take a lens-cleaning tissue paper and press to different spots on your face. If it sticks everywhere and the paper becomes translucent, your skin is oily. If it sticks to only your t-zone area, you have combination skin. If it doesnt stick or pick up any oil spots, your face is dry. But what does each skin type mean?
•Oily: Shiny, enlarged pores, prone to blemishes and blackheads, possible tightness, Often those who suffer from moderate or severe acne
•Combination: Dryness on the cheeks and more oily in the t-zone area.
•Normal: Medium pores, smooth and even texture, it is the ideal skin type because the skin has a balanced production of oil.
•Sensitive: Thin, delicate, fine pores, flushes easily, prone to broken capillaries, allergic reactions and rashes. A reaction on sensitive skin is often the result of the environment or to products placed on the skin, so sensitive skin can also be oily, combination, normal, or dry. Therefore, sensitive skin tends to be more of a skin condition than a skin type.
•Dry: Feels tight, tendency or fine lines, flaking, and red patches, prone to inflammation or aggravation, skin may be ashy or dull from dead skin build up. However, it may also be a result of cold or dry weather as well as dehydration.

12.Choosing your foundation
Another important part in choosing a foundation is the finding RIGHT COLOUR! So often I see people wearing foundation two times darker than their neck or two times lighter. But yes, it can be total pain to find the perfect one, with so many different choices in foundation (where to begin?) and limited colour choices (uh… only 5 choices in colours?). As well, there are other factors that play large roles in the choosing of the right foundation, so colour choice is not always the main priority for some. Because everyone is born with different complexions and tones and skin colour, it is so hard to find a foundation that will match your coloring perfectly. Unfortunately, with the limited amount of colour choices, often or not, what the manufacturers will mix together and call shade 1 and shade 2, you will be in neither or between. So mixing becomes a great choice. It may take some more time to do so, but by mixing foundations together, you can obtain the right colour for you.

NOTE:
Stay out of the sun when it’s rays are the most harmful, like around noon. Early morning sun and late afternoon sun (5:00 and after) is great for the body to produce vitamin D!

Q: Is it true that the rays can only penetrate the outermost layer of sunscreen on your face? E.g. If I wear SPF 50 and then put on an SPF 10 foundation on top of it, will the sun’s rays stop at the foundation layer? Haha because this is what a skincare sales lady told me and I thought it sounded like a load of bull crap!
A: First of all, that b*tch is an idiot and probably didn’t even know what she was talking about, because if she DID?? She would have been a bit more passionate about the sunscreen portion and not about the makeup portion. You can’t ADD UP SPF numbers like that to equal a STRONGER sunscreen. The SPF in your MAKEUP only protects against B-Rays! So things like sunburn, rashes, blahblahblah. If your makeup doesn’t specifically state that it protects against UVA as well (which it most likely doesn’t)?? Then it doesn’t!! And the UVA rays will still go deep into your skin and shrivel you up like a prune! Makeup with SPF in it is NOT a proper substitute for UVA/UVB sunscreen.

Q: i’m 12, do i have to use sunscreen when i go out, or do i have to worry about wrinkles? because i don’t want to get wrinkles, but i’m still pretty young, i mean i have acne, so i think i’m young.
A: At 12 years old, your skin cells are still doing pretty great at dividing, protecting itself, etc. But it’s STILL being attacked by UV rays at the same time and SLOWLY killing your cells. If you want to stay youthful looking LONGER and SLOW DOWN THE AGING PROCESS DRAMATICALLY, you should be using sunscreen! But if you want to get old-looking super fast and look back on these days as the best you’ve ever looked, then go ahead and go without it. Lol. But also, if you have acne, remember to take care of your skin! Don’t just use sunscreen. Always cleanse it!

Q: I NEVER go into the sun, i mean EVER. my mom looks like a teenager still! People think she’s 17 and my sister hahaa. Another thing, my type of skin is combo. i use cetaphil moisturizer but it has NO spf, what should I do? What other moisturizers would work for me? I LOVE cetaphil though too. I get dry patches easily when I dont use it. Thanks for doing this! It helped out a lot!
A: You can do one of two things! 1.) Apply cetaphil moisturizer so it sinks into your skin, and THEN apply sunscreen over that (which is fine, and what people do normally anyways). Or 2.) Get a new moisturizer + sunscreen combination! Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF15 is a good choice. Amaaazing stuff. And if you don’t like that, just stick to Cetaphil and just grab a sunscreen to put over it real quick!

Q: So does that mean I shouldn’t go tanning?
A: TANNING IS THE F*CKING WORST FOR YOU!! Bed tanning for ten minutes = a FULL DAY IN THE SUN. And you’re only supposed to get FIFTEEN minutes of sun exposure. Instead, you’re getting 1440 minutes of sun exposure!! WTF OVERKILL. That’s 96x the amount you actually need!! Ahahahahahahhaa insane. Get sunlass tanning gel! Clarins Tanning Gel is much safer, and the tan is gorgeous.
