The Beauty of Sunscreen

Posted by admin

Mineral based sunscreen is the only one to use. Minerals are inorganic substances and do not break down in the presence of UV rays. These sunscreens will not leave your skin ‘ghostly white’. These are elegant, silky, matte sunscreens. They are not moisturizers. Sunscreens must be applied to the skin after moisturizers.

Sunscreen – an impassioned plea

Posted by admin

Please Please PLEASE look after your skin and wear broad spectrum sunscreen every day… and reapply!

Broad spectrum sunscreens provide protection from UVA (the rays that cause aging and skin cancer) and UVB rays (the rays that cause sunburn). If a product says SPF and it doesn’t say anything about broad spectrum protection or UVA rays, chances are you’re not fully protected.

To provide broad spectrum protection the product must contain at least one of these ingredients:
avobenzone (Parsol 1789 or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane)
titanium dioxide
zinc oxide
Tinosorb
Mexoryl SX (ecamsule)

Check out Part 2 for what I use on my skin.

Sunscreen: The Critical Facts

Posted by admin

UV rays from the sun bombard this planet everyday and age your skin. To reduce the aging effects of UVA and UVB you need a serious mineral based sunscreen. If you are not using a mineral based sunscreen then you should reapply your sunscreen every 2 hrs. Using a combination moisturizer/sunscreen? Sounds nice and convenient…but it is not ideal for the majority of skins. There is the marketing hype around sunscreens, and there is the scientific facts about how the sun damages your skin and the most effective sunscreen ingredients.

I want to know which sunscreen or sunblock lotion (brand) would be the best to use on the face and the rest of the body. Which one is mild and safe enough to use everyday yet, strong enough to offer worthwhile protection from the sun and to stop from getting tanned. Also, which spf is most recommended for use, does using a greater spf value mean less tan and more uv protection?

I would recommend a sunblock constaining both (micronized) zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and spf 30-40 would be ideal. Using a higher spf means that you can stay in the sun longer without burning, however you must top up every 2 hours, to maintain that level of protection. An spf 30-40 blocks approximately 97%-98% of UVB rays and no sunblock can block 100% UVB rays. A sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide gives broad spectrum UVA protection also. Take care : )

Brands of Sunscreen?

Posted by admin

Does anyone know the name of some brands of sunscreen that contain zinc oxide? I’m looking for something with a SPF 30+ and I live in Australia.

Lately I’ve been using TruKid Sunny Days SPF 30 Sunscreen; it comes in both a water resistant stick and a lotion form. The face stick has zinc oxide in it, but the lotion is only titanium dioxide. Both of them work really well though and are all natural (no parabens, phthalates, SLS or synthetic fragrances). I know they ship internationally if you are willing to pay for shipping. I’d really recommend it if you’re looking for a safe, effective, quality mineral sunscreen! Good luck!
